Blooming Neighbours

Supporting wellbeing, independence and pride at home

Blooming Neighbours is a place-based community project designed to support older and disabled residents who may be struggling to keep their gardens safe, manageable and welcoming.

For many people, a garden is more than just an outdoor space. It is a place of routine, pride and enjoyment. However, as physical ability changes, even small tasks such as mowing the lawn, clearing leaves or cutting back overgrowth can become difficult or unsafe. Over time, this can lead to gardens becoming inaccessible, creating trip hazards and impacting confidence and wellbeing.

Blooming Neighbours provides light-touch, practical support to help residents stay on top of their garden before these challenges escalate.

What we do

We offer short, practical visits focused on safety, accessibility and visible improvement.

Support typically includes:

Mowing small lawns Light weeding and tidying Cutting back low-level bushes and overgrowth Clearing leaves and debris Sweeping paths and patios

Our approach is deliberately simple and proportionate. We focus on the tasks that make the biggest difference to safety and confidence, rather than large-scale garden transformation.

A safe and supportive approach

Each visit is delivered by a small, supervised team, led by an experienced Project Lead. This ensures that all work is carried out safely, respectfully and to a consistent standard.

Clear boundaries are in place to protect both residents and volunteers. The service does not include heavy gardening, tree work, ladder use or large waste removal.

All tasks are agreed in advance, with residents supported to prioritise what matters most to them.

Supporting independence and dignity

Blooming Neighbours is built on a simple principle: people should be able to feel proud of where they live.

By helping residents maintain safe and usable outdoor spaces, the project supports:

Independence at home Physical and mental wellbeing Confidence in using outdoor space Reduced risk of slips, trips and falls

This preventative approach helps address small issues early, reducing the likelihood of more serious problems later.

Local, community-led delivery

Blooming Neighbours is delivered neighbourhood by neighbourhood, building trust and visibility within local communities.

Each area operates as part of the wider model, for example:

This place-based approach allows the project to grow sustainably while remaining responsive to local need.

Affordable and sustainable

Residents are asked to make a contribution towards the cost of each visit. This helps maintain dignity, ensures the service is valued, and supports long-term sustainability.

Where possible, funding and local sponsorship are used to subsidise support for those who may otherwise struggle to afford it.

Get involved

If you or someone you know could benefit from support, or if you would like to refer a resident, please get in touch.

We also welcome local businesses and organisations who would like to support the project through sponsorship and help make a visible difference in their community.
